Once inseparable pals, Dave (Jason Bateman) and Mitch (Ryan Reynolds) have drifted apart over the years. Dave is an overworked lawyer and family man, while Mitch has thus far avoided most of the normal responsibilities of adulthood. Each is envious of the other's life, and following a drunken binge, the men awake to find they have somehow switched bodies. Dave and Mitch soon discover that things are not as rosy as they seemed and try to find a way to return their lives to normal.

Critics Consensus

There's a certain amount of fun to be had from watching Bateman and Reynolds play against type, but it isn't enough to carry The Change-Up through its crude humor and formulaic plot.

I've always loved this movie. It's not some sort of spectacularly shot masterpiece, but fantastic performances from the whole cast and some hilarious scenes make it worth it. I end up watching it like once a year it's one of those movies that feels like home to me. I don't understand so many negative reviews. People are so stuck up these days...

Comedy was okay, kinda been there done that. Definitely not worth the time watching. The reason for my low rating is the first scene of the movie there is for no reason a shot of two babies genitals. Why or how that is acceptable is beyond me and for that reason I cannot recommend this movie.

The Change-Up, starring Jason Bateman and Ryan Reynolds, sets out with a familiar but always promising premise — two very different people magically swapping lives. We've seen this blueprint before in movies like The Parent Trap, Face/Off, and Trading Places, and while the idea is still genius in its simplicity, this version struggles to keep it fresh. Bateman and Reynolds are both naturally funny and deliver some great moments early on. Their chemistry and timing definitely help keep the first half of the movie moving at a decent pace. But somewhere around the midway point, the concept starts to feel tired. The jokes become more predictable, the emotional beats feel forced, and the story loses the energy it started with. While it’s far from a disaster and certainly has its entertaining moments, The Change-Up ultimately feels like a comedy that leans too heavily on a recycled idea without doing quite enough to make it feel new again.
