Henry D @Henry_Domke Jul 20 Oddly dated and stagey, and we nearly gave up on it. The costumes never looked lived-in, and many of the sets were obviously artificial. Fortunately, some of the humor worked, and we could still appreciate the scale and expense of the production. Nothing about it reminded us of the other Billy Wilder films we’ve seen, and none of the actors were familiar to us. It badly needs a new transfer, since the version we watched was low-resolution and even showed visible scratches. See more Joaquin U @Joaquin1 Jun 30 Somewhat entertaining. Not a Sherlock Holmes film; it’s a total transgression of the source material. Another attempt to turn a strong male character into a whiny, frail, doubtful, closeted, pompous drug addict with no self‑control, constantly overshadowed by everyone else. That’s the opposite of the actual character, because… why not? It will be good for someone's agenda. The movie has its share of funny moments, and the locations look visually appealing, but it has a so‑so cast. Poorly scripted and directed, and heavily edited by the studio, supposedly — whether it was once better or worse, we’ll never know. What is left is overlong, not very funny and very slow; what could have been terrific as a study in Holmes' repressed sexuality is just kind of... meh.
