Ian B @RT21217020 Jun 14 Having watched and thoroughly enjoyed the BBC TV adaptation of His Dark Materials, I decided to purchase the blu-ray of The Golden Compass recently. I wish I'd read the reviews here first as I'm largely in agreement with the general criticism of lack of story development. The film is so rushed and disjointed that, even as someone who knows the entire story inside out, I never felt even the slightest engaged when watching the film. It's such a shame as it feels as though the enormous talent the cast had to offer was simply wasted. Combined with the extremely poor CG rendering of most of the daemons, there really was no magic here. To be fair, the BBC had another 12 years of CGI development to leverage for the TV series, but I was expecting so much more from a film with a $180M budget. Philip Pullman had no control over the making of the film but is adamant that he didn't want any at the time. I wonder if he still feels the same way since the release of the BBC TV version. Important plot points were glossed over, so then it seems like they won’t be important, when they actually are. This movie could have used a longer runtime, and it’s already decently long. The plot is also all over the place and is a bit confusing. But the film was still entertaining and the mystery was interesting. I just wish the movie was more focused and a bit slower. However, you didn’t understand what exactly was going on. The action at the end should’ve happened sooner there should’ve been longer build up. The movie needed to be longer to get the story across. It was very rushed. You couldn’t tell the difference in parts of the story that are important to remember and which are not. Mostly because it was rushed.
