I found the book an interesting take on Bridget's life adventure and journey but the movie just didn't work. We get to see a ton of former characters, which is interesting, but little is really known about them and they seem trapped in their world from 20 years prior. And for that matter, so does Bridget. I expected a Bridget who was grieving but discovers, maybe with a little help, that she's not this woman who still can't dress herself like a grown up, still has hair that looks like she doesn't care and is still the same clueless wonder. Bridget never seemed to grow up. Some viewers found this charming but I found it depressing. In fact, the whole movie is depressing. Everything feels forced and the chemistry that's supposed to exist between Bridget and her very young lover seems extremely fake. The movie struck me as a story about aging and headed toward the end of life, not a restart in midlife as it attempts to sell. See more Robert N @chobiFarts Jan 19 Mad about the boy? I’m going to go read neitsche See more Thomas W @Misterw18005 Jan 4 Renee Zellweger's performance normally has me splitting my sides, but this movie elicited a few smiles at best. I don't know what was wrong with me; I just felt numb to the humour, but on the more positive side, the plot was exquisite. Although they killed off two of the most beloved people in Bridget's life (which these days is done when either the actor passes or is recast so badly it's nigh-immediately warranted), this added a firm integrity to the storyline and contributed to the growth of Bridget's children without just feeding the audience on poorly-written laughs and recycled jokes. I feel the primary strength of this movie is that it causes its viewers to feel an immensely heavy emotional weight through the masterfully-convincing, heartfelt dialogue between the actors and their life-like reactions.
