Manon of the Spring (1986) 81% EDIT “Based on Marcel Pagnol’s 1962 two-part novel L’Eau des collines, Berri’s films are a gorgeous meditation on rural life, cruelty, fate, revenge and redemption. ” – Spectrum Culture Jan 13, 2026 Full Review Jean de Florette (1986) 93% EDIT “Based on Marcel Pagnol’s 1962 two-part novel L’Eau des collines, Berri’s films are a gorgeous meditation on rural life, cruelty, fate, revenge and redemption. ” – Spectrum Culture Jan 13, 2026 Full Review Hamnet (2025) 86% EDIT “In Chloé Zhao’s oddly inert cinematic adaptation of Maggie O’Farrell’s excellent novel, the story is reduced to vapid Oscar-bait. ” – Spectrum Culture Dec 1, 2025 Full Review The Running Man (2025) 62% EDIT “This topical action remake doesn’t commit to its dystopia. ” – Spectrum Culture Nov 14, 2025 Full Review Blue Moon (2025) 90% EDIT “If Hart’s lyrics establish mood, Linklater is going for a blue one here. ” – Spectrum Culture Oct 24, 2025 Full Review If I Had Legs I'd Kick You (2025) 92% EDIT “It is hard to watch If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, but there is no doubt it is a well-made film. ” – Spectrum Culture Oct 21, 2025 Full Review The Long Walk (2025) 88% EDIT “Unlike most horror films, The Long Walk doesn’t feel like a thrill ride, lacking the visual panache and moments of beauty necessary to make it more than just cruel entertainment. ” – Spectrum Culture Sep 12, 2025 Full Review Twinless (2025) 97% EDIT “Sweeney continues to push genre conventions with his new film, Twinless, a bittersweet comedy-drama that explores relationships and loss. ” – Spectrum Culture Sep 5, 2025 Full Review Thief (1981) 80% EDIT “Like Frank, the character he masterfully plays in Thief, it is impossible to fully like James Caan. But if you look closely, you can see how guys like Tony Soprano wouldn’t exist without Caan’s influence there to pave the way first. ” – Spectrum Culture Sep 3, 2025 Full Review Highest 2 Lowest (2025) 83% EDIT “There is plenty to like here, yet this is neither Spike Lee’s highest nor his lowest. ” – Spectrum Culture Aug 18, 2025 Full Review Eddington (2025) 68% EDIT “At this point, it’s fair to call Aster a miserabilist, one who not only has little faith in humanity but appears to enjoy torturing his characters. ” – Spin Jul 18, 2025 Full Review Drugstore Cowboy (1989) 97% EDIT “Portland is a city that takes itself seriously but also doesn’t, and Gus Van Sant’s Drugstore Cowboy reflects the city’s attitude in its humor. It doesn’t get too bogged down in tragedy, even when the worst occurs. ” – Spectrum Culture Jul 16, 2025 Full Review Sorry, Baby (2025) 97% EDIT “A lesser movie would turn Sorry, Baby’s script into trauma porn or a melodramatic weeper. Instead, the film signals that Victor is a major new talent who knows how to tell a difficult story.” – Spin Jul 8, 2025 Full Review Paper Moon (1973) 91% EDIT “With Paper Moon, Bogdanovich funneled the comedy of What’s Up, Doc? and crossed it with the dusty, melancholy DNA of The Last Picture Show to create his last truly great film. ” – Spectrum Culture Jun 17, 2025 Full Review How to Train Your Dragon (2025) 77% EDIT “Perhaps seeing a human ride on a dragon never gets old, but how many films do we need each summer with some sort of giant lizard threatening to devour our human heroes? ” – Spectrum Culture Jun 13, 2025 Full Review Pavements (2024) 95% EDIT “Alex Ross Perry’s crooked and slanted hybrid is one for true Pavement fans. And no one else.” – Spin Jun 6, 2025 Full Review Sister Midnight (2024) 98% EDIT “Sister Midnight exists to break conventions, break Uma free from the hell of arranged marriage and us from our preconceived notions of what Indian cinema should or shouldn’t be.” – Spin May 22, 2025 Full Review The Legend of Ochi (2025) 75% EDIT “Imagine E.T. with everything good drained away and you get The Legend of Ochi. ” – Spectrum Culture Apr 25, 2025 Full Review The Uninvited (2024) 77% EDIT “The Uninvited is a thoughtful, literate film, one that could have been much better with deeper characterization and a more focused script. ” – Spectrum Culture Apr 14, 2025 Full Review Death of a Unicorn (2025) 52% EDIT “There is almost nothing redeemable about Alex Scharfman’s Death of a Unicorn. ” – Spectrum Culture Mar 28, 2025 Full Review Pandora's Box (1929) 93% EDIT “G.W. Pabst’s silent classic Pandora’s Box may show its director’s obvious expertise, but its arresting performances are the reason to watch it almost 100 years later. ” – Spectrum Culture Mar 19, 2025 Full Review Eephus (2024) 100% EDIT “Come for the baseball game, stay and marvel at the keenly observed mundanity. ” – Spectrum Culture Mar 12, 2025 Full Review Paris, Texas (1984) 95% EDIT “Sometimes, the best movies about America aren’t made by American directors. ” – Spectrum Culture Feb 18, 2025 Full Review Victims of Sin (1950) 100% EDIT “Victims of Sin is a moody, gritty and poetic musical melodrama full of violence, eroticism and a potboiler plot featuring prostitutes, pimps and gangsters — but it still gives its heroine a way to face the future.” – Spectrum Culture Jan 21, 2025 Full Review Wolf Man (2025) 48% EDIT “Above all of its myriad problems, the cardinal sin of Leigh Whannell’s take on H.G. Wells’ classic story is guilty of is that it’s boring and mediocre across the board. ” – Spectrum Culture Jan 17, 2025 Full Review
