Bonnie M @BonnieM Dec 30 I loved this movie. I really just don’t understand the poor rating. I thought it portrayed loss grief depression avoidance and on the flip side patience persistence resilience and the long rode to healing so well. I was alternately laughing and crying the whole movie. Melissa McCarthy Kevin Kline and Chris Owd were all perfectly cast and I thought they gave flawless performances. I didn’t find it sappy at all. I found it emotional and tragic and touching and frustrating - just like life. I literally created my rotten tomatoes account just to give this review because I thought this movie did not get a fair shake. If you like movies that depict normal people overcoming the heartbreak that often occurs in life - but also portrays the love humor and absurdity of life and human reaction to it - this movie is for you. Yes, it is quirky, yes, it is sentimental but it also cuts through tragedy with humour and I think makes good use of the absurd. It was criticised one one hand for making light of such a serious theme but I think this is true to life. You lose a child, yet life goes on. You are a woman who loses a child and your husband has a nervous breakdown - you have to just carry on even more so. It is a portrait of the kind of person who is ignored in life and art. The ordinary person going through tragedy who does not articulate their emotions and whose emotions are, in any case, overlooked. It is also a good protrait of the utter selfishness of depression. Not saying it is intentional but looked at objectively depression is self-absorbed. I appreciated one of the end scenes, when the husband has apologised McCarthy's character looks at him as if to say 'let's see how long this lasts.' See more Shauna B. Nov 25 Very good movie!
