Its been written so beautifully and yes there will be cheesy moments, but its all about their cancer journey and how at such a young age they try to live their lives. Yes, it contains one of the most jarring and tasteless scenes ever put to film. I still don’t understand how an otherwise thoughtful, relatively well-written film could handle such heavy subject matter with surprising nuance and then have two teenagers with cancer kiss in the Anne Frank House while a crowd applauds. The film also stumbles whenever it tries too hard to be intellectual. Van Houten’s philosophical digressions can perhaps be excused as deliberately abstract, but elsewhere there are a few too many grand words and ideas without quite enough finesse to keep them from sounding pretentious. And yet, the cast and performances are wonderful. The film very obviously sets out to make you cry, but for the most part, it earns those tears without becoming overly sentimental. It manages to create some genuinely beautiful, well-crafted relationships between its characters, and I still find myself rewatching it. It follows Hazel, a teenager living with cancer and an oxygen tank, who meets the confident and charming Augustus at a support group. Their romance could easily have become a collection of medical-drama clichés, but the film works because it treats them as teenagers before treating them as patients. Shailene Woodley is excellent, bringing intelligence, humor, fear and quiet vulnerability to Hazel, while her chemistry with Ansel Elgort gives the story warmth. The film is manipulative, sentimental and sometimes too carefully constructed around its big emotional moments, but the characters are likeable enough for those tears to feel earned. Their journey is full of love, hope, and difficult moments that show how precious life can be. The film stars Shailene Woodley as Hazel and Ansel Elgort as Augustus. Both actors give amazing and realistic performances that make the story even more touching and heartbreaking. This movie is emotional, romantic, inspiring, thought-provoking, memorable, touching, heartbreaking, and beautiful. I highly recommend it, especially if you enjoy movies that make you cry.
