The atmosphere Bertino creates in his near-singular location-set movie is dripping with dread; he films most scenes in such naturally dull light that it makes the outside world seem much further than a pull of a curtain away.

The Dark and the Wicked is my best forgotten film of the 2020s so far. It’s a slow-burning horror experience that relies more on atmosphere and tension than constant jump scares, which makes it feel more unsettling overall. The film builds an overwhelming sense of dread throughout, using silence, isolation, and haunting visuals to create something genuinely disturbing. It stays with you in a subtle but powerful way. The performances are strong and grounded, which helps the story feel believable and emotionally heavy. The direction is controlled and precise, never wasting its eerie atmosphere. Overall, it’s a haunting and effective horror film that left a lasting impression on me. It stands out as one of the best of the decade so far. I rate it a 10/10.
