Nate D @MamdanisDomMommy 5d The production design was thoroughly enjoyable to behold. That's about the only good thing I can say about this film. The characters are about what you'd expect from a 7th grade creative writing class and are all impossible to believe or care about in any way. Why is only one crew member trained in the operation of the tool the mission's success depends upon? Why do they have absolutely no operational plan in place for repairing failed shield tiles? Why can't the otherwise omniscient ship's computer double check proposed course changes? Why is the weirdo meat captain they stole from Event Horizon trying to sabotage everything? Who cares. Vague sci-fi thriller with poorly executed deeper themes. I feel the idea of wrestling with nature and faith are touched… but most of the movie is space ship crew drama and survival. I liked the characters and loved the themes. I also enjoyed the story, but to be honest there was one point where it went a little too far for my taste. I loved the ending though. The directing is really good and the style of the cinematography is a big part of that. The pacing could be tighter, but it plays into the directing style. The production design and the visual effects are amazing, especially for 2007. The cast is unbelievable and the performances are incredible. Sunshine is a good and stylish film. Poses big questions about God and sacrifice, doesn't really deal with them, however.
