It's a quiet film that moves slowly but also packs a strong emotional punch at its conclusion. The film is simple in plot but complex in emotional truth. Martin, a widowed father, wakes up his two children to tell them they are about to go on a road trip. Their house has been foreclosed, so we know that the family is financially imperiled. Over a few days as they head to Omaha, Nebraska they spend time together in motels and we see how the family function as a unit and how damaged Martin is as a man. We get a strong feeling that bad things are around the corner, but I won't spoil how it ends. But I can say that the emotional impact is quite high. John Magaro is perfectly suited in his role. His emotional intelligence as an actor is quite high and he is superb as Martin. A small film but a highly excellent one. But the quality of the production, acting and cinematography is first rate. The child actors deserve particular praise. At the final conclusion it was very thought provoking and thoroughly sad as it's based around real events that happened to real desperate people. The performances feel incredibly real, especially the bond between the father and his children, and the quiet storytelling makes every moment hit even harder.
