Now as an adult, finally getting the opportunity was GREAT. This movie really is GREAT and it gave me so much nostalgia. I loved it then and love it now. Class or possibly even a masterpiece!!! Gil Kenan turns the wonderful central idea — a haunted house that is literally alive — into an inventive children's horror adventure, using doors, windows, stairs, and rooms as parts of the creature itself. The motion-capture animation looks slightly uncanny today, but that actually suits the atmosphere. DJ, Chowder, and Jenny are likable, the comedy works, and the scares are strong enough to excite children without overwhelming them. It even finds some unexpected sadness beneath the fun. Not revolutionary, but enormously enjoyable and easy to recommend. Every budding horror fan under fourteen should see it. The motion-capture technique hasn't aged well and gives the characters an odd look, but the plot and atmosphere more than make up for it.
