A seventy-two-hour whirlwind in the life of bohemian artist Amedeo Modigliani (Riccardo Scamarcio), known as 'Modi' to his friends, follows a chaotic series of events through the streets of war torn Paris in 1916. On the run from the police, the desire to end his career and leave the city is dismissed by fellow artists Maurice Utrillo (Bruno Gouery), Chaïm Soutine (Ryan McParland) and Modi's muse, Beatrice Hastings (Antonia Desplat). Modi seeks advice from his art dealer and friend, Leopold Zborowski (Stephen Graham) -- however, after a night of hallucinations, the chaos in Modi's mind reaches a crescendo when faced with an American collector, Maurice Gangnat (Al Pacino), who has the power to change his life.

The energetic and arguably strenuous performance by the lead actor, Riccardo Scamarcio, is something of a flex, to be sure. Go to Full Review

The more it goes on the clearer it becomes that, though Depp no doubt admires Modigliani’s work, his real passion here is for the eternally intoxicating fantasy of Parisian bohemia. Go to Full Review

This Johnny Depp-directed story of artist Amedeo Modigliani (1884–1920) is livelier and more passionate than most biopics, somewhat elusive, a touch rambunctious and wild, and undeniably personal. Go to Full Review

The opening scene of the film, which is equally disconcerting in its introduction of the protagonist sketching women in a restaurant for coins, fails because the humor is clumsy, naive, and not at all original. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Analia Nov 12 This is the best movie I saw for years, everything is there, drama, comedy, it is funny, sarcastic and safe at the same time. I loved ut. Johnny Depp is an amazing director and Ricardo complete the masterpiece. Bravo See more Yvonne de Boer Nov 9 Johnny Depp is a creative genius and goes from his heart and soul. He put everything into this film. It is not just a biographical film at all. Its deeper than that. The soundtrack is beautiful. The portrayal of love life and loss is beautiful. I highly recommend this film its much deeper and again its all Johnny Depps vision and its pure magic, beautiful true story intertwined with how we find life and death sometimes life imitates, death, friendships love loss and picking up the pieces and moving on. I highly highly recommend this. See more Dylan J @tjames 8h Modi serves as both a period piece and biographical film. Behind the camera, Depp is eccentric and masterful in capturing the grittiness of war-torn France and the desperation of a struggling Modigliani within his outlandish art circle. A frenetic three days finds Modigliani reveling with friends and lovers, battling his mortality and creativity, and slumming the streets of a France in pursuit of recognition. Each shot has so much character, feeling like distinct paintings themselves. Standout performances by both Ryan McParland as Chaïm Soutine and Riccardo Scamarcio as Amedeo Modigliani. The ending of this movie genuinely moved me. This movie didn't get much recognition, but Depp's work as the director is impressive. Bravo to all involved. (I was a fan of Soutine going into this movie, so seeing him alive fictionally was a treat.) See more Jake S. @TheBrewMan Feb 14 One of a kind. You have to watch it all.
