Convinced of his irresistible appeal to women, Texas dishwasher Joe Buck (Jon Voight) quits his job and heads for New York City, thinking he'll latch on to some rich dowager. New York, however, is not as hospitable as he imagined, and Joe soon finds himself living in an abandoned building with a Dickensian layabout named Enrico Ratso Rizzo (Dustin Hoffman). The two form a rough alliance, and together they kick-start Joe's hustling career just as Ratso's health begins to deteriorate.

The characters’ dreams and memories intermingle with their daily actions, sometimes combining in surreal ways. The camerawork is amazing, capturing vistas of glory and grime from the dawn of 1970s New York.

This was one of my father's favorite movies. I thought it would be more upbeat, but it turned out to be a realistic portrayal of human misery. A critique of capitalism and the 'American Dream'. I was pleasantly surprised by this feature film, which deserves all the praise. The characters had big dreams and ambitions that stayed purely in the realm of ideas and imagination, something that happens to many people around the world. Ultimately, it's a very melancholy and realistic film.

Was it really rated X for a time? Dang that's crazy. I don't even remember there being any nudity in it. Good iconic performances. Pretty old movie as well.

Brilliantly sad and harrowing, Midnight Cowboy is a masterpiece of empathy, friendship, and love. The final scene and mournful harmonica, never fails to bring tears to my eyes. Beautiful and very poignant.

Synopsis
