Kevin L @Lakeman Jun 15, 2026 It's hard to live in the past when the present is pushing in on you. This ol' hombre just wouldn't take no for an answer. Good work from Douglas, Rowlands, & Matthau. Does have a mix of worthy writing along w/ some tired subplots, like the meathead prison guard (George Kenneday), goofy deputy, & the sweet wife back home angry at men & all their wrongheaded, selfish actions. It's an entertaining mix of western tropes and how modern times put an end to that era. Directed by David Miller, w/ writing by Dalton Trumbo from source material by Edward Abbey. 3.2 stars See more Bryan M @RT97114384 Feb 27, 2026 I am a huge fan of old movies and I have seen almost all of the great ones so when I run across a gem that slipped past me I get fired up. Kirk Douglas is one of GOATs but then you throw in a young Walter Matheau, a young Carol OConner among others and you have a stellar cast. The only bad thing I can say about this movie is the title is awful. I am with Douglas who apparently wanted the title to be "The Last Cowboy". that made perfect sense but he was overruled. See more Peter G @Petermovielover Dec 6, 2023 A film for those who have have difficulty abiding Douglas as an actor. This is one of his greatest performances, IMO, as well as being a slightly off beat role for him. He plays a modern day cowboy at odds with a disaffected society who in seeking to live a chosen independent life runs afoul of the law & escapes a minor jail incarceration & with his horse attempts to exercise his freedom of choice. Gena Rowlands & Walter Matthau round out the cast effectively with early roles for Carroll O'Conner & George Kennedy. The splendid black & white cinematography of the mountainous region where Douglas evades his pursuers visually adds greatly to the films atmosphere & this is certainly one of Douglas' greatest roles. The message, courtesy of Dalton Trumbo, concerning an individuals struggle to remain true to his basically decent nature, is still a potent statement after some 60 years. Well worth seeing. This is truly moving because the film is mostly uplifting until that moment, but it was hinted in the beginning. Oldschool vs modern. Friendship between he and his humble horse 'Whiskey' is a gem. See more isla s @RT89656869 Sep 3, 2022 This is a film about one man and his horse - as the title hints at, its a loner tale and its somewhat poignant at times. It has a bit of a classic feel to it with it being in black and white and I'd say its the sort of tale that most people may be able to relate to, to one extent or another, of the individual who isn't as keen to move on with the times as others. It features a decent cast and while its a little slow or even bland at times, mostly it was a good watch and so I'd recommend it to others. See more Read all reviews
