Critics Consensus

Legend of the Guardians' dark tone and dazzling visuals are to be admired, even if they're ultimately let down by a story that never lives up to its full potential.

The stars of this computerised epic are the Design and Art departments, who provide stunning landscapes, caves and kingdoms, and whose 3D magic is genuinely thrilling. Go to Full Review

Once again, Snyder backs a project more about visual presentation than storytelling, a trend that’s getting old for those waiting for the director to turn out a film worthy of his evident talent. Go to Full Review

An intelligent, often thrilling excuse to soar the skies with a beauty and grace rarely found in digital animation outside of the Pixar stable. Go to Full Review

Chris L @Christoph2000 2d There's a reason Zack Snyder never made another animated film post-this one: he crushed so many spirits so decisively by shooting way off target in a movie brimming with heaps (and I mean heaps) of potential. The way his signature slow motion is applied here is particularly incongruous and annoying. Stunning animation and the hiring of every actor in Australia and New Zealand isn't enough when characterisation, awe and the very soul of the picture are totally forgotten about. Since I've never been anywhere near the source material I'm judging the movie purely on its own merits: I wouldn't pinpoint this as the best entry point for kids seeking out dark fantasy (not that they likely would since few appear to know it exists) given the absence of wonder. I love when the sensation of flight is captured in the cinema, so credit where credit's due. Even without real emotional stakes that final battle turns out to be pretty thrilling, but Kludd's evil turn happens comically quickly. Although there is alot of fighting it is still a well written story that I believe will help kids understand more than be sheltered from ideas of seeing war and allow a new view and creativity in ones life.
