Critics Consensus

The Last Airbender squanders its popular source material with incomprehensible plotting, horrible acting, and detached joyless direction.

A quite breathtakingly inept hodge-podge of vapid spirituality, playground chopsocky and visual effects that take 3D to an entirely new level: Zero-D. Go to Full Review

This empty, misfired epic from M. Night Shyamalan is boring and strengthens the claim that he is the worst director working in mainstream cinema today. Go to Full Review

The Last Airbender is a bad film ... But I don’t think this is an absolutely terrible catastrophe of a film or even a disrespectful adaptation. Go to Full Review

The Last Airbender plays like it should be the work of a low-grade hack with little-to-no experience behind the camera, but instead, it’s by a director who not so long ago was praised as one of today’s finest new storytellers. Go to Full Review

Catherine M. @RT62564181 43m Not only does it butcher the original material, but it’s hard to watch as well. The transitions are horrible, the story line doesn’t make any sense (unless you’ve seen the original show), and the script and acting is hard to watch as well (no hate to the actors, they did the best with what they were given). It’s a 2hr movie and it took me and my sibling 2 days to even be able to finish it. See more mark G @Mark_Alan_G. 15h Powerfully awful. Terribly acted, directed and written. This seems like one of those films where someone in the crew should have gone to the producers and told them, man this guy is making a huge piece of crap right now. See more Indigo O @RT59761170 Mar 8 Not accurate to the source material at all, and also not a good interpretation of the show either. I think the actors did okay with what they were given, and the set designs were cool, but the dialogue and especially the portrayal of bending was AWFUL. What do you mean fire benders can't produce their own fire? Why does it take ten earth benders to move a small rock?? What strange choices... See more Dogcat T @Dadogcat Feb 16 This is easily the worst movie I’ve ever seen, especially because it takes such incredible and profound source material and completely wastes it, in terms of quality and the very characters and plot itself. See more Nicholas K @Skippyasyermuni Feb 11 Had to come back in 2026 to express my hate for this movie the absolute garbage it was still haunts me to this day. I haven't scene an M. Knight movie since not will I. The fact that he defended this piece of garbage just shows how arrogant he is and terrible he has become it taking any sort of criticism.
