See more Penelope Y @RT31899006 Sep 7, 2025 A wonderful film featuring incredibly talented leads- Ian McKellen and Brendan Fraser. The story follows James Whale, the director famed for his Frankenstein films, now past his prime, and a handsome young gardener hired to work in his home. They gradually form an unusual friendship, openly discussing their lives and the taboo subject of homosexuality in 1935. I especially loved the interactions between the two leads as they carefully toy with and question each other’s sexuality. McKellen’s charming yet sly performance is endearing and thoughtful, making it easy to empathise with his character and also hate his character at the same time. Throughout the film, James struggles with his health, dying fame, loneliness and drifts between tormented war memories and reality. Gods and Monsters is a 1998 period drama film written and directed by Bill Condon, based on Christopher Bram's 1995 novel Father of Frankenstein 👺 An interesting, though sometime uneven biopic … It’s good 🙂 Worth a watch. See more Martijn t @Mr_Marty Dec 27, 2024 Very interestingly told biopic, where sometimes Whale's movies and his real life mix up in flashbacks. The movie dares to show dark sides of Whale and Boone characters, although in Whale's case the stroke he has had plays a role in that too. Sometimes it is a bit too much of a literary adaptation though, with McKellen giving long monologues clearly lifted right from the book while sitting on a chair. His life story is told in flash backs, showing us his involvement in World War I and the filming of Bride of Frankenstein. The majority of the film is about the relationship between Whale (Ian McKellen) and the man employed to trim his lawn, Boone (Brendan Fraser). We always expect a considered and powerful performance from McKellen, but at the time Fraser was not really known for serious acting. This shows his range as he virtually matches McKellen and the scenes between the two are both compelling and convincing. Amazing film and I’m glad I finally watched it. See more Read all reviews
