Critics Consensus

Despite a strong opening that promises sci-fi thrills, Event Horizon quickly devolves into an exercise of style over substance whose flashy effects and gratuitous gore fail to mask its overreliance on horror clichés.

I want to like Event Horizon; it just doesn’t do a damn thing for me except remind me of a bunch of actually good things that were probably going through Paul Anderson’s dull head while he was creating this. Go to Full Review

Dan Oct 22 Top Tier space horror See more Roland Oct 22 Event Horizon is sci fi horror at its best. Movies like this and Alien that answer the question, what's out there? In a delightfully horrifying way. Cast is solid, story is solid even with its 90s cheese but that just adds to the vibe. Still holds up in 2025, a must watch for the horror genre. See more Shark F @SharkFin 7h One of my favorite space horror movies. Couldn't sleep after watching it! See more Jonathan R @MovieDude23 Jul 19 I do not understand the negative reviews for this movie! It may be the fact that some people are critiquing it as a science fiction movie, when in fact, it is a horror movie with a SPACE setting. I saw this move in the theaters as a kid( yes, I know) and I loved it then, and love it still to this day. Sam Neil does an excellent job playing both a scientific pioneer as well as a sinister force. The true core of the movie explores the depths of not space, but reality itself, and essentially places us in a setting where we we were not meant to be. The Event Horizon crosses the path of no return, and therefore, harbors all the memories it has experienced through space and time ( and beyond) .This movie’s true concept is to explore the idea of not only confronting the unknown, but that some things are meant to be unknown to humans for a reason. The movie’s explores the idea of confronting a reality we not only are unaware of, but we’re never meant to experience, and the consequences of that See more Dave K @BilboBagsy Jul 15 You can tell it’s clearly a huge achievement for the genre. The visual direction of the film really stands out and Paul W.S Anderson has done an incredible job of creating a visually stunning setting with a dark and claustrophobic atmosphere. The film's makes heavy use of visceral and explicit cerebral terror. It really adds to the psychological experience the characters are enduring. It's a genuinely unnerving experience with some incredibly heavy depictions of violence. The characters are led by Sam Niel and Lawrence Fishbourne which give strong performances that are unfortunately let down by weak dialogue. The acting is certainly entertaining and I found the scenes where they are hallucinating and slowly going crazy very powerful, it also worked incredibly well for the film's narrative. I must say that I found the third act lost a bit of its momentum and I found the humour in the film terribly misplaced. It’s actually a film with an excellent idea but it’s just not for me. 6 / 10 See more JP V @JPGrey Jun 14 Critics are tastless num nums. This movie is a classic, it works in almost any level.
