The idea of a hypochondriac stuck in a hostage situation is brilliant, but the execution ends up being a mixed bag. Sure, some jokes work (Oliver fumbling around pretending to be a doctor had its moments), but a lot of the humor feels forced or stale. The movie keeps a steady pace and the actors are likable, but the whole thing winds up feeling just okay rather than truly great. The pace is lightning fast, throwing one ridiculous situation after another at you, and I enjoyed almost all of it. Dr. Norstrom’s character especially cracked me up. He’s so blasé about all the insanity going on that it just kills me. Some of the humor is pretty silly, but I was laughing too hard to care. Even the armed robbers in Trump masks wind up as comic relief. The writing is clever in a goofy way, and the cast’s comedic timing is spot-on. Even my teenagers, who are usually hard to impress, couldn’t stop laughing at the ridiculous clinic shenanigans. There’s plenty of slapstick and witty banter, so everyone found something to enjoy.
