It delivers on being an action packed, tongue in cheek, over the top, violent revenge movie that is put together in fine proportions by Robert Rodriguez. Whilst you can question it's lack of depth around the storyline and characters, you simply cannot take away from how much it entertains and keeps you watching. A fine display all round. Robert Rodriguez upgrades everything: the gunfights, music, slow-motion, violence, humor, and style all have much more swagger. Antonio Banderas is excellent as El Mariachi. He brings charisma, danger, romance, and cool to the role, making the character feel mythic in a way the first film only hinted at. Salma Hayek is terrific as Carolina, giving the movie heat, intelligence, and emotional connection, and her chemistry with Banderas is a major reason it works. The opening and bar shootouts grab the audience quickly and show Rodriguez at his most playful. The story is thin and mostly exists to move from one stylish confrontation to the next, but the attitude, music, and star power make Desperado a really fun action movie. Also the performances are all so memorable. This is the film that made Antonio Banderas an action star. The movie’s plot is simple, Banderas is plays a guitar-playing vigilante, seeking revenge on the drug lord who killed his lover. The movie features plenty of action, explosions, and fun dialogue. This film is also a sequel to Robert Rodriguez’s first film ‘El Mariachi’ which was low budget. Check out Desperado! Desperado gets a high 4 1/2 stars out of 5 from me.
