It’s not just an important story, it's also told in a way that gripped me and it has some of the best performances I have ever seen from Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto. The film isn't the most historically accurate depiction of Woodruff. In reality he was an openly bisexual man and was a vocal member of the Dallas Gay Alliance. While this is a major change from the truth it serves as the film's point of conflict and it does work incredibly well for both character and story development. Jared clearly researched and spoke to many trans people to build a convincing character. The controversy surrounding the casting decisions were heavily debated by the trans community but as a result the industry changed the approach and this led to many trans people being cast in much more prominent roles. While people may argue that a straight man shouldn't play a trans man, this is the same as saying a gay man can't play a straight man. 8 / 10 See more Caleb S @review-person-friend77 May 26, 2026 This movie was powerful. I’ve always been a proponent of using medicine through legal means, but this movie made me rethink a lot of my opinion about regulations concerning the terminally ill. I was very impressed with the acting and the storytelling and how it helped the viewer to overcome stereotypes and prejudice towards people with HIV, particularly homosexual and bisexual patients. As a movie, it did its job—it helped change the audience’s paradigm through art. If anything, I am much more compassionate toward those who want to seek alternative treatments. See it was sad that the struggle that he had to go through to get to the point to where he is today Matthew McConaughey he yet again doesn’t disappoint.
