Excellent performances from Stephen Rea, Donald Sutherland, Joss Ackland and Imelda Staunton, and let's not forget Max Von Sydow as the psychologist and Jeffrey DeMunn as the serial killer, Chikatilo. No, don't worry, that's not a spoiler. Citizen X is all about the arduous police investigation in pursuit of the real life serial killer in Soviet Russia, Chikatilo; the investigation and how the political system thwarts any progress in the case. Bearing the brunt is tenacious cop Burakov (Rea), a forensics expert and rookie detective tasked with finding the killer or killers. His resources are few and his team is too small, but he has an indomitable will, and little by little, he ennobles everyone around him, including his lackadaisical superior, Colonel Fetisov (Sutherland). Best scene: when Burakov finally gets professional recognition, and from the enemy no less!
