Boy Erased is careful to humanise Jared's parents as loving, but wrongheaded. If anything, it's too respectful of their damaging views. Go to Full Review

The film feels thin, drab and ultimately unable to harness the collective power of its otherwise talented cast. Go to Full Review

It provides some interesting moments of drama and some insightful observations. But it feels emotionally lacking when all is said and done. Go to Full Review

Boy Erased scans as, and turns out to be precisely, textbook Oscar-bait: it’s topical, its heart is in the right place, the cast is stacked, and despite all good intentions the final effect is very meh (“powerful” is a word I expect to see used a lot). Go to Full Review

A deft touch is brought to a delicate subject matter that downplays rather than heightens, even as harrowing as scenes can be. Go to Full Review

Cory @D4rk_Ang3l.71 6d really captures the hell that are conversion camps/ therapy including the feeling of guilt for being queer. the assault scenes are horrible but it's to tell a story of struggle and pain that no soul should ever have to go through.. yet we STILL live in a society where it's so normalized. the movie was unbearably slow paced... I don't recommend watching it if you're already in a slump it will make you feel worse! some of the characters are horrible people and I wish that this wasn't based on a real story. I feel for the writer. See more Tom M Jan 21 Yes. Underwhelming is probably the word I would use. Maybe I expected it to be more harrowing. But midway there is probably where the truth lies. The people doing the converting have many hundreds of years of bible thumping homophobics creating the state of some Christian churches against homosexuality and it skews their worldview. See more Gavin H Jul 5 This is such an important message in the US and shows how damaging parenting can be if it's about them and their reputation rather than about the child. That is tricky to be sure. No one is trained to be a parent AND and that is a big AND having a moment of reflection, introspection is so vitally important to protecting our kids health. It also shows the harm in religion. I use that in the pejorative as if the bible is read as the intended reading, then homosexuality is no different than having a meal with mixed meat. There is tons of context in reading a religious book. Why single out one misread section and apply that to the whole of humanity. A very good coming to terms movie with lots of honest moments. Literally nothing happens its just the same thing over and over again. No drama or love interests or anything. I gave up with half an hour left because i was just so bored. I dont recommend.
