Soon after the Montelli family buys a house in the Long Island suburb of Amityville, unsettling events begin to occur. Mysterious demons seem to infest the house, preying on abusive father Anthony (Burt Young) and ferociously religious mother Dolores (Rutanya Alda), who calls on family priest Father Adamsky (James Olson) for an exorcism. Teenage Sonny (Jack Magner) is drawn furthest into madness, abusing his younger sister, Patricia (Diane Franklin), and eventually exploding in a horrific fury.

…locates the doomed family’s issues firmly within male intransigence..here’s real edge and conviction rather than cheese and gore, it's surprisingly well performed and it’s literally the only movie in the Amityville franchise that works…

Campier than its much tamer predecessor, Amityville 2 is a slasher crossed with an Exorcist film. Featuring a queer-coded priest, incest and solid practical effects, this sequel is a wild ride.

Impressive, all things considered. Better than the first one for sure, but this one just takes the first one and amps it up to max, and draws some big inspiration from the Exorcist! Risky, but i'd say it works out quite good to be honest.

Amityville II: The Possession takes some bold and albeit controversial chances in its blatant attempt to rip off a certain early '70s classic and while it is by-the-numbers and formulaic in most cases, it's also why it makes this sequel a better but marginal step-up from its predecessor.
