There are way more jump scares and more memorable characters. It’s the fantastic acting that brings the characters to life. There is so much going on, it’s hard to turn away. This is such a great haunted house movie, nearly as good as Poltergeist (1982). It is so visceral and sometimes genuinely shocking. This is definitely a sequel that is better than the original. The first half is a haunted house movie much in the vein of the original, the second half is full-on demonic possession. This second half very obviously took inspiration from The Exorcist (1973) which is interesting because seemingly The Exorcist III (1990) took inspiration from Amityville II. This is the best imaginable combination of The Exorcist and Poltergeist. See more DanTheMan 2 @DanTheMan2150AD May 18 Far campier than its much tamer predecessor, Amityville II: The Possession is a much more stylish and ultimately terrifying affair, yet it's unexpectedly wild, fun and truly bizarre, playing more like a hypersexual slasher crossed with a haunted house film. Under the direction of Damiano Damiani, there's a great deal more energy and visual panache to the film as the camera is much more active with far more daring angles and movements, especially with its abundance of point-of-view shots from the perspective of the malevolent entity, creating a genuinely sinister atmosphere that on more than one occasion will send shivers up your spine. The film's script crams everything from abuse to incest, locating the doomed family's issues firmly within male intransigence, but then takes a sharp and underwhelming turn towards the end with a relatively half-hearted Exorcist riff that undercuts so much of the gripping suspense present in the first half even with the spectacular, practical effects heavy climax. Led by a cavalcade of engaging, sometimes over-the-top, performances and another unnerving score by Lalo Schifrin, The Possession makes for a much more interesting and engrossing film than the original, compulsively watchable and rarely boring.
