He beautifully captures multiple chapters of Valdez's life, and answers many questions a Luis Valdez fan and admirer would have; how his family influenced him, the origins and evolution of El Teatro Campesino, and how the most successful Chicano film to this day, La Bamba, was a global hit. As a Gen-Z Chicano filmmaker, Luis Valdez and his work serve as a beacon of inspiration, and the documentary shares a meaningful fraction of what it takes to be successful as a Mexican American in entertainment. That said, this documentary can touch and move anyone, regardless of your interest in film as it deals directly with someone -- no, an expert -- in creating human connection through art. The director’s work was excellent, and it was impressive to view the farmworkers' movement and Teatro Campesino footage in crisp 4K. Luis Valdez’s story feels especially relevant and significant today. Seeing our stories, struggles, resilience, and identity portrayed on the big screen was both validating and deeply emotional. There were so many moments that felt personal and relatable, and I walked away having learned even more about the history and experiences that shaped our community. Luis Valdez has made such an incredible contribution by preserving and sharing these stories. I left the theater feeling proud, reflective, and grateful.
