The sound of barrel-scraping during true-crime documentaries is becoming more and more frequent at Netflix these days... A Toxic Love Story is a welcome, if doubtless temporary, return to form.

It’s something weirder, something that plays into our modern-day fascination with tech, obsession with self, the need to be the center of attention, and using psychological tools to manipulate the vulnerable. What a tangled, mangled web.

Loved it - indeed one of the craziest stories. Nice to see it shorter and more concise than many of the genre, although perhaps too much so as a lot of the questions were left unanswered. Wasn't Michelle more strongly protesting her innocence while in jail for 88 days and why weren't police following up on that? I guess that's why she eventually got a payout from them. Didn't Angela implicate Jason as well, once she was arrested? So then why did it take the DOJ so long afterwards to crack the case? I guess we may still get a fuller, 6-part series to come...

A lot of unresolved threads. While interesting for the most part, it does get sidetracked a lot. Thankfully, it didn't go in the direction of a three-part mini-series.

A Toxic Love Story started with a premise that seemed promising, but it never developed into anything memorable. At first, I thought the story was building toward an emotional and compelling look at a complicated relationship, but it gradually lost its momentum and became increasingly difficult to stay invested in. The screenplay never fully explores its characters or gives the audience enough reason to care about their journey. Instead, the pacing slows to a crawl, making the film feel more like a documentary than an engaging drama. I kept waiting for a moment that would pull everything together, but it never arrived. The performances are decent enough, but they’re held back by weak writing and underdeveloped characters. Overall, A Toxic Love Story is a bland, slow-moving film that never lives up to its premise. Despite a potentially interesting concept, it lacks the emotional depth and engaging storytelling needed to leave a lasting impression, making it one I can’t recommend.
