The former musketeer Athos (John Malkovich) swears vengeance after despotic King Louis XIV (Leonardo DiCaprio) causes the death of his son. Summoning his old comrades Porthos (Gérard Depardieu) and Aramis (Jeremy Irons), he hatches a plan to liberate a shackled prisoner rumored to be the king's twin brother, and then install him on the throne. But the three musketeers must also contend with their old friend D'Artagnan (Gabriel Byrne), who has remained in the king's service.

Once all the pieces of the plot were in place, I was at least interested, if not overwhelmed; I could see how, with a rewrite and a better focus, this could have been a film of Braveheart quality instead of basically just a costume swashbuckler.

As aging musketeers, Jeremy Irons, John Malkovich, Gérard Depardieu and Gabriel Byrne-each sporting a different accent-all look faintly embarrassed, like serious actors stuck performing at a kids' birthday party.

I remember watching this in the theater and I kind of love it… and now no so much. It’s uneven at the beginning is so Hollywood, in a bad way, but slowly became better but not so much. Kudos for the performance of DiCaprio very well done.

Es una película sin duda interesante, aunque deja bastante que desear en el aspecto de la actuación tanto como en el guión. Considero que ambas partes fallaron en dar lo mejor de sí. No obstante, es una historia de nicho y una historia de cultura. Recomiendo verla a cualquier cinéfilo o cineasta por el simple hecho de ver algo diferente, algo de época, algo de nicho.

What a waste of an allstar cast! At times the dialogue and acting is lauhgably bad. The setpieces, costumes etc. on the other hand are really good. Some might get some enjoyment out of this as a campy movie or a "movie so bad it’s good" kind of way.
