The performances are exceptional, particularly Brad Pitt, Robert De Niro, and Dustin Hoffman, who give the story a human weight that keeps it from becoming merely a revenge tale. The film understands that justice and vengeance can look frighteningly similar when viewed through the eyes of the wounded. Dark, powerful, and deeply unsettling, Sleepers is a story about boys who survive the unthinkable, and men who refuse to let it be forgotten. It shines a light on the abuse that goes on behind closed doors, domestically as well as in public establishments like schools. The issue with this film is the script itself, which is straightforward and sadly leaves no room for interpretation or suspense. Additionally, the second half of the film is almost exclusively set in the court, which can become long winded and repetitive and causes the loss of the film’s particular character.
