Orin D @RT64117979 Sep 11, 2026 Under Capricorn is not one of pantheon director Hitchcock's best films. !st it is too long & could easily be trimmed by 30 to 45 minutes. @nd the pacing is too slow w/ not a tense moment arriving until well into the film. The gorgeous Bergman is first rate as are both Cotten & to a lesser degree Wilding. Margret Wilding as the conniving maid Millie is excellent. The film for good reasons was a financial flop! This is an intriguing story that deserves another take by a great contemporary director like Martin Sorcese w/ maybe Kate Blanchett as Lady Henrietta, Liam Neeson as Sam & Tim Roth as Adair. I would like to see a soundtrack by Nicholas Cage who is an Aussie. There is a great sexual tension here mid-film 'tween Bergman & Wilding in those pre-graphic, pre-nudity days & a remake might consider remaining likewise chaste. I hope this fine story gets another take soon. Orin P. The film initially feels dense, with interwoven subplots, yet every scene eventually finds its place, keeping me attentive to every nuance. Jack Cardiff’s cinematography transforms each frame into a moving painting—composition, color, and setting create an immersive atmosphere I want to inhabit. Hitchcock doesn’t shock loudly; he seduces slowly, weaving romance, sacrifice, and darker impulses into a quietly elegant narrative. Hitchcock's cameo I didn't find, but did see the generations of truth in the plot. Not my favorite by Hitch, but I still love his work. See more Dick C @Joshua19930826 Jan 30, 2023 It's an excellent motion picture, Under Capricorn, a 1949 British historical thriller film directed by Alfred Hitchcock who puts all his focus on the leading actress, Ingrid Bergman...Firstly, she burns the Margaret Leighton's punishing leather stick to demonstrate she's the one in charge now...Secondly, she confesses bravely to the Australian Colony Governor for her murder of her brother...Actually, Alfred shows many things Ingrid's transforming... Casting is strong, such as the "Milly" by Margaret, "Sam" by Joseph Cotten and the last but not the least, final scene, Michael Wilding's statemnet... See more May 6, 2021 3 good performances from Cotten, Bergman and Wilding. Took a while to get going but improved steadily in the second half.
