Hands of Stone (2016) Thelma Adams To watch Ramirez and DeNiro spar in the boxing biopic Hands of Stone -- the story of Panamanian fighter Roberto Duran and his aging American trainer Ray Arcel -- is to revel in two nimble performers striking with power and clarity.

2/4
Florence Foster Jenkins (2016) Thelma Adams The material could have used a full-out comedic plot in the P. G. Wodehouse vein or something slyly sophisticated like Wes Anderson's The Grand Budapest Hotel. Instead it gets lost in the shallows -- along with Streep's Oscar chances.

Weiner (2016) Thelma Adams "Weiner" emerges as the political film for this election cycle, the tragicomedy we deserve.

Criminal (2016) Thelma Adams Orange is the new black for Kevin Costner in Ariel Vroman's crazy sci-fi espionage actioner, a star vehicle that fast and furiously leaps from action set piece to action set piece in an obvious effort to avoid the giant plot holes imperiling the story.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot (2016) Thelma Adams Fey's female-driven comedy, written and directed by men, follows the tradition perfected by Evelyn Waugh in his 1938 novel Scoop. While his fish outta water story is hysterically funny and enduring; the forgettable WTF only delivers an occasional chuckle.

Hail, Caesar! (2016) Thelma Adams Joyous chaos is what the Coen Brothers harness in their generous-spirited wet kiss to the industry they continue to master and remake. Bliss!

Carol (2015) Thelma Adams The notion that true love is a physical, emotional and spiritual bond between two individuals (whatever their sex) forms the powerful theme of a film that glistens from every pore, including those of Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara

The Keeping Room (2014) Thelma Adams The home invasion thriller occasionally clashes with the period damsels drama-a bit more breathless, a little less breathy? And, yet, the feminist Civil War film remains a fascinating historical tale unfolding on fertile ground.

2/4
Sicario (2015) Thelma Adams Denis Villeneuve's Sicario is a slick, simplistic view of the War on Drugs propelled by great perfs from Blunt, Del Toro and Brolin and balletic violent set pieces. I wanted "Traffic," I got movie crack.

Testament of Youth (2014) Thelma Adams Lithe and serious Alicia Vikander stars in the gossamer-and-gritty, female-driven WW1 period drama. Adding in "Game of Thrones" Kit Harrington gives this PBS-style drama added John Snow oomph.

Tomorrowland (2015) Thelma Adams Tomorrowland is "Spy Kids" in space. Which turns out not be a bad thing although it may come as a surprise to those who have watched George Clooney do the P.R. rounds, hefting his epic charm as if it were Thor's hammer.

Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) Thelma Adams Tom Hardy is mad as hell and he's not going to take it anymore. Well, OK, maybe one more time in George Miller's furious adrenaline pill that's true to the movie's kick-ass roots.

Welcome to Me (2014) Thelma Adams In the burnt-toast black Sundance comedy, Kristen Wiig goes dark and bipolar without losing her shield of likeability. It's a superpower to be marveled at, like the ability to carry on a long conversation without looking at one's mobile device.

Woman in Gold (2015) Thelma Adams Helen Mirren has become like Meryl Streep: nearly every time she has a leading role a little alarm goes off that signals Oscar gold.

The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2015) Thelma Adams If there is such a thing as a warm-bath movie, The Second Best Marigold Hotel defines it. Judi Dench, Maggie Smith and Bill Nighy just get better with age in a mild comedy that celebrates life to the very end.

What We Do in the Shadows (2014) Thelma Adams Darkly, edgily funny, the mockumentary about four nocturnal, bloodsucking flat-mates in Wellington, New Zealand reduced me to a quivering laugh zombie. It's MTV's Real World meets Hammer Horror with a nod to Christopher Guest.

1.5/4
Fifty Shades of Grey (2015) Thelma Adams The biggest disappointment for those non-readers of the book is the feeling of is-that-all-there-is? A bit of rope, some hanging around, six smacks - it's tame enough to make Tyrion Lannister of Game of Thrones smirk.

Mommy (2014) Thelma Adams Like the bastard child of John Cassavetes and Ingmar Bergman, prolific French Canadian film director Xavier Dolan has made an exhilarating, intimate family drama that digs deep and plays dirty.

Blackhat (2015) Thelma Adams Even if you love Michael Mann, and lust for Chris Hemsworth, this deep January technothriller does not compute.

4/4
Into the Woods (2014) Thelma Adams Stephen Sondheim's Into the Woods, as directed by Rob Marshall, from James Lapine's screenplay, is movie musical bliss - better than Marshall's Oscar-winning Chicago and so much better than his miscast, misbegotten Nine.

Top Five (2014) Thelma Adams Multi-hyphenate Chris Rock kills in the hilarious account of a stand-up comic turned movie star that wants to be taken seriously.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1 (2014) Thelma Adams This dark-and-dour installment suffers from saga sag, which is the effort of the Hollywood studios to stretch a stirring girl power series with a monster fan-base beyond reasonable limits for the sake of lucre.
