Kattalan, despite assembling a sizeable technical team, lacks even a single genuinely memorable set piece. Most of the fights feel aggressively over-edited and excessively stylised. Go to Full Review
S. R. Praveen The Hindu May 29
The writers are clearly not interested in these characters. They are deliberately using them for the film’s emotional impact and to underscore the need for revenge. Go to Full Review

2.5/5
The film is so committed to momentum that it mistakes exhaustion for escalation. By the time the climax arrives, the violence has stopped feeling shocking and started feeling repetitive. Go to Full Review

Kattalan is little more than a series of slaughters carried out by men who saunter through clouds of smoke created by fog machines and cigarette smoke. Go to Full Review

1.5/5
While there are scores of movies with poor, shoddy writing, Kattalan might be the first Malayalam film that gives the feeling that no writing went into it. Go to Full Review
Vishal Menon The Hollywood Reporter India May 28
And when they are not conveying plot points or exposition, Kattalan becomes home to some of the most pompous punchlines in all of our cinema. Go to Full Review

Nandhu R @Kingmaker___6 37m They cooked up a film with a runtime of under two hours, yet it still struggles to engage. Other than the impressive BGM, the weak story and screenplay drag it down. The final cameo only makes things worse. Overall, it's a disappointing experience. It's an avoidable flick. Style and noise can't make up for weak writing. See more arvind S @Arvind100 May 31 Ivory trade is the topic of discussion here, with one group trying to best the other in the illegal sale of ivory. Someone is brought in to help, but that person has his own ulterior motives. The sad part is that no one really cares about elephants here. So much so that they had to put a disclaimer at the end stating that no one in the movie actually hates elephants. Anthony Pepe may have to pick up another genre. He has gotten so lost in this one, that he seems to be sleepwalking through this film. The same flying punch action sequences, a lot of slo-mo (almost every character has multiple slo-mo entries). Sunil Varma is ok, but not a great villain. Kabir Duhan Singh looks less menacing and more like your overgrown vagabond cousin with his curls. And there are so many characters who don't even have lines but are just there to thrash people. I am not sure what was the purpose of Dushara Vijayan's role. The two cameos are ineffective.
