Ben D 11/14/2024 It’s difficult to rate Interkosmos because I’m not exactly sure what I watched. Considered a “Socialist Utopian Shoestring Budget Sci-Fi,” the alleged $12,500 movie is a collection of clips reciting socialist ideals, (fictional) historical lessons, and advertisements for two USSR missions to colonize far-away moons, Titan and Ganymede. Woven throughout is a subtle love story between two cosmonauts, “Seagull” (Nandihni Kaund) and “Falcon” (Jim Finn, also the director). I’d love to see this redone today, with a larger budget and a more coherent story. To its benefit, the pseudo-doc is only 71 minutes, which allows you to appreciate the aimless art, unlike a similarly low-budget movie from this year, Skinamarink. There are literally 0 reviews on RT, with (unsurprisingly) the most detailed one out there coming from The Village Voice. Aesthetics alone — Late-Soviet Cosmonaut Utopian is always fun — make this one worth watching. Sure, the musical number goes on for far too long and sometimes the vaudevillian structure makes it a little tedious, but Interkosmos is a picturesque outline that hopefully someone, someday, will turn into a feature.
