Jay W @RT52162311 Oct 20 There are three main tiers of Horror Movie Icons. At the top, we have Frankenstein, Dracula and Wolfman. The second tier is Invisible Man, Gill Man and Mummy. Then at the bottom we have Hunchback, Phantom and Mr. Hyde. These bottom characters are still iconic horror characters, but they don't have a go to film adaptation. Jekyll has a new version come out about every decade, and this is... one of them. This version certainly pulls out all the stops. They have cutting edge practical transformation effects years before "The Wolfman". It also makes bold cinematography choices. For 1930's standards, this film would have been considered very risqué. This is the only one that pronounces "Jekyll" the way the author intended. The story itself deals with the duality of man. It could be an allegory for alcoholism, abstinence or abusive relationships. On the negative side, this story is now so omnipresent that the original can feel redundant at this point. It is frustrating to see these characters make such dumb decisions. Overall, this is a fine adaptation of a classic tale. Paramount's worthy competitor to Universal's hold on the horror movie genre. On one hand, I was really impressed by the performance of Fredric March as the protagonist and antagonist. In fact, I looked up the cast on IMDb just to make sure it was the same actor playing both parts. Also, this film has some highly dramatic moments and some semi-shocking parts from a Pre-Code Hollywood era. On the other hand, Mr. Hyde’s look is a little goofy, and the transformation scenes, while impressive for the time, seem a little hokey now. It wasn’t as scary as I hoped it would be, but Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is a well-made movie. See more Read all reviews
