The Homesman (2014) Thelma Adams Director/Star Tommy Lee Jones confounds, making brilliant American cinema on the back of the blockbuster dime from Men in Black, the Fugitive -- and Ameriprise ads. Hilary Swank goes spare and true paired with Rodrigo Prieto's restrained camerawork.

Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) (2014) Thelma Adams While I love all the smoke and mirrors, and Keaton's herculean Oscar-bait comeback beside Norton's ripping supporting performance, by the third act, I lost traction. I began to wonder: what was the there there?

Gone Girl (2014) Thelma Adams There hasn't been a soignée blonde so flat-out hate-able since Gwyneth bitched about the burdens of motherhood. Welcome to the A-list, Gone Girl star Rosamund Pike!

The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) Thelma Adams Anderson has conquered scale and story, balancing humor and deep emotion. His antic period piece about a "liberally perfumed" concierge of a once-grand Eastern European resort (Ralph Fiennes), is charming, wondrous, nostalgic and dazzlingly original.

Lone Survivor (2013) Thelma Adams Given the title, clearly this drama won't end well. Dir. Peter Berg showcases the talents of a bearded band of actors: Mark Wahlberg, Taylor Kitsch, Emile Hirsch & Ben Foster. No peacenik critique, "Survivor" could inspire grunted praise from John Wayne.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013) Thelma Adams Quality stuff, an entertaining package. For those that retained their skepticism last time, this may even appear to be a better film. But HG has become a victim of its own success, co-opted by Hollywood, a rebel not without a cause, a money minter.

Captain Phillips (2013) Thelma Adams While "Captain Phillips," to its credit, honors the pirates with more back-story, and they evolve as characters ...the end still lands squarely in a Hollywood space.
