Ben Rolph

Tomatometer-approved critic
Biography:

I am YouTube TV and Film critic, I mainly cover the DC TV Shows doing weekly reviews on Supergirl, The Flash, Arrow, Krypton and a few more. Over the summer I do breakdown videos on new news forthe shows. However I am at heart a film person along with my love for TV, on my film channel I do in-depth reviews of my favourite recent films in a video essay manor. I also work with 'Discussing Film' of which I'm going to start doing film reviews for very soon and I also have done interviews with them on their YouTube channel (Cress Williams, Black Lightning). I watch most films that are released to UK cinemas, I have attended Netflix film screenings and many preview screenings and I tend to voice my thoughts quite a lot via social media (Twitter) in regards to films and TV shows.

Avatar: Fire and Ash (2025) 66% 3/5 EDIT “The CGI is undeniably strong, but in 2025, it no longer feels groundbreaking.” – Multiverse of Color Jan 1, 2026 Full Review Sons of the Neon Night (2025) 20% 6/10 EDIT “As it stands, it’s a fascinating, flawed, and undeniably ambitious work that remains a genuine mixed bag.” – Next Best Picture Oct 8, 2025 Full Review The History of Sound (2025) 70% 4/5 EDIT “Some might be left underwhelmed by the quiet, restrained forbidden romance at the center of The History of Sound, but the movie actually thrives off those untold feelings and emotions, especially when Paul Mescal and Josh O'Connor are at their best.” – Discussing Film Sep 14, 2025 Full Review Frankenstein (2025) 85% 5/5 EDIT “Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein is a haunting yet beautiful retelling of the iconic tale. Steeped in Gothic traditions, Jacob Elordi steals the show as he delivers a truly tragic performance that reaches far beyond his amazing prosthetic Monster makeup.” – Discussing Film Sep 10, 2025 Full Review Jay Kelly (2025) 75% 5/5 EDIT “Writer-director Noah Baumbach and actor George Clooney craft an utterly endearing portrait of an aging Hollywood star in Jay Kelly. It's as if this story was always destined to be told by this creative duo on the big screen. ” – Discussing Film Sep 3, 2025 Full Review A HOUSE OF DYNAMITE (2025) 75% 2/5 EDIT “Oscar-winning director Kathryn Bigelow's first film in 8 years, A House of Dynamite, is a huge disappointment and poor excuse for a political thriller.” – Discussing Film Sep 2, 2025 Full Review Bugonia (2025) 88% 3.5/5 EDIT “Some fans will leave wanting more from Yorgos Lanthimos' latest, hoping for the director to do something a little different next time, while others will eat up his usual sensibilities in this absurdist remake. ” – Discussing Film Aug 28, 2025 Full Review The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025) 86% 3/5 EDIT “While the retro flair is fun and quirky, the story stumbles under the weight of familiar superhero movie tropes.” – Multiverse of Color Jul 24, 2025 Full Review Superman (2025) 83% EDIT “'Superman' is basically ripped straight out of the comics.” – TheDCTVshow Jul 10, 2025 Full Review Eddington (2025) 68% 3.5/5 EDIT “Ari Aster's Eddington captures the social horrors and political divide of the COVID-19 pandemic through hilarious black comedy that hits harder all these years later. However, the movie adds very little fresh substance to these real-life topics. ” – Discussing Film Jun 13, 2025 Full Review Renoir (2025) 87% C+ EDIT “Yui Suzuki leads the film effortlessly, she delivers a quietly powerful performance that the audience cares about deeply. ” – AwardsWatch May 20, 2025 Full Review A Pale View of Hills (2025) 63% 7/10 EDIT “Some of these deficiencies are threatening enough to derail the experience of watching “A Pale View of Hills,” but the impact of the story, paired with gorgeous filmmaking, is enough to keep one engaged throughout.” – Next Best Picture May 19, 2025 Full Review Two Prosecutors (2025) 95% B+ EDIT “Kuznetsov’s performance as Kornyev is one of restraint; his passion is seen through his quiet, yet unrelenting nature.” – AwardsWatch May 17, 2025 Full Review Nosferatu (2024) 85% 5/5 EDIT “Robert Eggers' Nosferatu is an enchanting gothic tale that boasts a bone-chilling combination of horror and romance. Exquisitely made with the utmost precision, it's the kind of masterwork that is destined to only get better upon every rewatch. ” – Discussing Film Dec 24, 2024 Full Review Stranger Eyes (2024) 82% A EDIT “Yeo Siew Hua’s follow-up to A Land Imagined is a detective thriller that cares little about thrills, despite using the genre to grab the audience’s attention, as it gracefully explores the slow, emotionally draining effects of a dire situation.” – AwardsWatch Dec 10, 2024 Full Review Joker: Folie à Deux (2024) 31% 4/5 EDIT “Despite how controversial the musical elements could be and how less “thrilling” it is compared to 2019’s Joker, it’s better that the filmmakers chose to take a creative swing rather than be safe. Joker: Folie a Deux is an entirely unique anti-hero film.” – Discussing Film Sep 4, 2024 Full Review Wolfs (2024) 66% 2/5 EDIT “Brad Pitt and George Clooney's first on-screen reunion in 16 years is failed by Jon Watts' unoriginal script and uninspired direction. ” – Discussing Film Sep 4, 2024 Full Review The Order (2024) 93% A EDIT “Kurzel has built an impressive repertoire of great films with a keen eye for great character studies.” – AwardsWatch Aug 31, 2024 Full Review Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024) 75% 3.5/5 EDIT “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is pretty safe for a legacy sequel, but director Tim Burton proves that his signature creative touch hasn't lost its magic. ” – Discussing Film Aug 28, 2024 Full Review Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1 (2024) 51% 3/5 EDIT “While Kevin Costner might stumble over some of his own ambitions here as a filmmaker, he still proves that he has something valuable to offer.” – Discussing Film May 28, 2024 Full Review The Surfer (2024) 84% 4/5 EDIT “The Surfer is a complete whirlwind of a film and a cult classic in the making.” – Discussing Film May 28, 2024 Full Review Limonov: The Ballad of Eddie (2024) 63% B EDIT “Ben Whishaw gives a delectable performance as he chews on Serebrennikov, Ben Hopkins and Paweł Pawlikowski’s jam-packed screenplay.” – AwardsWatch May 20, 2024 Full Review The Balconettes (2024) 76% B+ EDIT “As a director and an actress, Merlant truly lets loose and holds nothing back with her brilliant sophomore feature.” – AwardsWatch May 19, 2024 Full Review Megalopolis (2024) 46% 1/5 EDIT “Perhaps Megalopolis works in Coppola’s mind, though when translated into film, it’s a grand failure of huge proportions.” – Discussing Film May 18, 2024 Full Review Spaceman (2024) 50% 2/5 EDIT “There is little to like apart from the filmmaking in Johan Renck’s latest.” – Discussing Film Feb 24, 2024 Full Review
