In this film, director Jonathan Demme documents a live performance by Robyn Hitchcock, an English singer-songwriter. Instead of performing in a standard concert setting, Hitchcock brings his music to an abandoned shop in New York City. Before a small audience, Hitchcock plays tunes from his oddly engaging catalog. The intimacy is increased by the lengthy, surreal asides Hitchcock delivers between numbers, while the bustling city streets outside the store are visible throughout the film.

07/27/2022 The greatest 01 hour: and 17 minutes of real footage ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! See more 06/21/2012 This is an odd film in Demme's music film ouvre as it eschews the style and big stage production of "Stop Making Sense" and "Heart of Gold" for a bare bones production that works perfectly for Robyn Hitchcock's music. There is one camera transfixed on a makeshift stage in a Manhatten store with the window and passersby as the back drop. The star of the film is Hitchcock's unique music but non-fans will enjoy the presentation as well. See more 05/21/2011 The psycho-babble rants between songs are as good as the songs. Wish he'd picked better songs. See more 10/15/2010 Robyn Hitchcock is definitely a musician off the beaten path, not necessarily as profound as some fans would have you believe, but even so this is a concert well worth looking at -- "Stop Making Sense" director Jonathan Demme sets Hitchcock in a New York City shop and alters the background between each song. The changes are fluid, and the visuals compliment the music beautifully. This is a pretty obscure video to happen across, but it's one of those ignored/forgotten treasures worth rescuing. See more 09/03/2010 I'm not a huge fan of Robyn Hitchcock (my boyfriend is) but he is a great songwriter and I like his voice. This is a simple but well done concert movie directed by Jonathan Demme. Hitchcock speeches between songs are impresive. See more 11/22/2009 Robyn Hitchcock is a real treasure, and Jonathan Demme sure does know how to make music documentaries. Great combo.
