Three decades ago, the Rose of Nevada vanished at sea, along with its crew. Now, it has returned. In a remote fishing village, its reappearance is embraced as an auspicious sign, with the local citizens convinced the luck of their economically devastated community may turn, if only the ship sails again. Joining the crew is Nick (George MacKay), desperate to provide for his young family, and Liam (Callum Turner), a mysterious drifter eager to escape his past. After a successful voyage, they return to harbor, only to find that nothing is as they remember it. Shooting on a 16mm Bolex camera and constructing all the sound in post, Mark Jenkin writes, directs, edits and scores a haunting and hallucinatory time-travel mystery that further solidifies him as one of the most distinct, singular artists working in film today. Jenkin conducts a cinematic séance, conjuring a portal into another world that forces us to confront the past and our relationship to it.

Rose of Nevada is so uniquely its own thing, I strain for any comparison at all. Jenkin works the aforementioned technical restraints of his chosen vintage technology to extraordinary effect.

I’m lackadaisical about wherever the story intended to leave me, and unsure of its ruminations on whether the needs of the many outweigh those of the few. But I admire the way “Rose of Nevada” tells its story. Sometimes, my admiration is enough.

The visuals help bring us into the story. The 16mm look works here. A film about time and place that evokes the past look of films and tv specials, to tell the story of time gone and returned.

interesting to see a spiritual prequel/successor to The Lighthouse but now in Technicolor. unfortunately half of the movie is photographic composition styling fodder where no wide shots are allowed. it's just fishermen doing fishing things with a twist of back to the future but replace the cheerful comedy with British drama. also why are all the scenes on the ship SO LOUD?? also this gets the award for smallest credits text ever.

Rod Serling meets Christopher Nolan in this seaside mystery. A good movie does not need distracting special effects and sexual content. Acting, plot, character development, and cinematography make for a good movie. WHO KNEW??? Hollywood needs to get back on that path and follow Mark Jenkin in those directions.

British movies usually have some charm, a character that you connect with, humor. This had none. It was a dire watch. Disjointed, dull, uninspired. I made the mistake of thinking two of Britains brightest talents might aluminate it. I was wrong.

Your brain will boggle in the best way possible. I would have never thought that a psychological drama about time travelling fishermen would be possible but it very much is. - If any reviews say its long, boring or confusing they need to get a better attention span.

Worth seeing for the visuals alone. You'll have to work to sort out "what it means", as I'm still trying to do. Elusive. It made me think of Nietzsche's notions of eternal recurrence and amor fati. Accepting the life given to you. Philosophy aside: it was gripping and I didn't feel bored for a minute of it.
