Following the horrific 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon, Congress appoints attorney and renowned mediator Kenneth Feinberg (Michael Keaton) to lead the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund. Assigned with allocating financial resources to the victims of the tragedy, Feinberg and his firm's head of operations, Camille Biros (Amy Ryan), face the impossible task of determining the worth of a life to help the families who had suffered incalculable losses. When Feinberg locks horns with Charles Wolf (Stanley Tucci), a community organizer mourning the death of his wife, his initial cynicism turns to compassion as he begins to learn the true human costs of the tragedy.

You won't find a larger critique of the litigious nature of American society here, nor even the full story of the fund, but no matter. What's there is gripping and thoughtful, with outstanding work by Keating, Tucci and Ryan.

WORTH transforms its complex and somber subject into a worthy film subject, offering a sensitive portrayal of the legal, political, social, and moral accounting that informed the laudable 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund. Avoiding flashy dramatization, the film remains patient and grounded, if a little slow at times, with an equally understated impact that is nonetheless informative and perhaps even quietly inspiring.

This is a gripping film because of its focus on the human stories that follow as part of the aftermath of an event as large scale as the 9-11 terrorist attack on New York’s World Trade Centre twin towers. Michael Keating and Stanley Tucci are both excellent as they essentially square off as leader of the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund Keeneth Feinberg and widower community organiser Charles Wolf (Stanley Tucci), but ultimately this is a sombre rather than joyous movie.
