John K @WQCMI Jul 18 Its fine, but not a great film. The animation looks like something out of a Mobile Game ad and hurts my eyes, you can tell Sony distributed this film and didn't make it. Although, the Wish Dragon's design looks really good and I like how they took a spin on the Aladdin story by adding elements of Chinese mythology. Admittedly I was skeptical considering it’s a netflix animated original movie which tend to not be good and even at the beginning it’s not exactly capturing someone’s attention but give it a second to simmer and you’d be surprised how much subversion it utilizes, how it uses its rather lackluster character designs to make for some great shots, how it’s characters are charming and interesting to watch and how everyone’s motivations feel sensible and easy to root for. It has a familiar premise, but it still manages to feel heartfelt and entertaining. The animation is colorful and lively, and the film does a good job of mixing humor with emotional moments. What I liked most was the message about appreciating what you already have instead of chasing unrealistic wishes. The friendship at the center of the story feels genuine, and it gives the movie a lot of charm. It may not be the most original story, but it’s executed well enough to stand out.
