Part concert film, part documentary and totally fun, Barry Shils' 1995 release captures the good cheer, outrageous humor and high energy of downtown Manhattan's annual Labor Day "drag" extravaganza. Go to Full Review

By capturing the absolute fabulousness of boys in bouffants, Shils shows that the true heart of Wigstock is the same as that of the original late-'60s bad-hair love-in on Max Yasgur's farm. Go to Full Review

Wigstock: The Movie is perhaps not quite as refined as Woodstock, but it is an important cultural touchstone nonetheless. Go to Full Review

dave s 10/03/2021 Wigstock: The Movie wisely structures itself after the concert documentary Woodstock, featuring plenty of backstage interviews and interactions with residents of the area interspersed with some great live performances. The film documents the 1994 Wigstock Festival held in New York's East Village, where drag queens from across the country gathered to entertain a throng of thousands over the course of a day. While it may not be the most in-depth or insightful documentary ever made, it is contagiously fun and the exuberance of the performers and the fans can be felt throughout. It's a bit of a history lesson for the initiated and a great introduction to the drag scene for the uninitiated. See more 08/02/2021 RuPaul was an icon then and is an icon now!
