Before going on vacation, self-involved psychiatrist Dr. Leo Marvin (Richard Dreyfuss) has the misfortune of taking on a new patient: Bob Wiley (Bill Murray). An exemplar of neediness and a compendium of phobias, Bob follows Marvin to his family's country house. Dr. Marvin tries to get him to leave; the trouble is, everyone love Bob. As his oblivious patient makes himself at home, Dr. Marvin loses his professional composure and, before long, may be ready for the loony bin himself.

What About Bob? is the rare comedy where the most dangerous weapon isn't a gun, it's relentless optimism. Bill Murray turns neediness into an Olympic event, while Richard Dreyfuss delivers one of cinema's great slow-motion meltdowns, proving that sanity is often just good lighting and a little personal space. The genius of the film is that it keeps asking who the real patient is, then refuses to answer because it's having too much fun watching everyone unravel. Somehow, amid the glorious emotional wreckage, it lands on a surprisingly comforting truth: the people who drive us absolutely crazy are sometimes the ones who accidentally teach us how to live. It's hilarious, deceptively sweet, and ages like the kind of joke that gets funnier every time someone else loses their composure.

Revisited this movie for the first time since I was a child, and it holds up really well. Murray and Dreyfuss really shine. Just an agonizing ordeal for Dr. Marvin, caused by Bill Murray just being Bill Murray.
