In West Canaan, Texas, high school football reigns supreme. When starting quarterback Lance Harbor (Paul Walker) turns up injured, the Coyotes' ruthless coach, Bud Kilmer (Jon Voight), must promote benchwarmer Jonathon "Mox" Moxon (James Van Der Beek) to lead the team in its quest for a divisional title. Suddenly thrown into the spotlight, Mox must deal with the pressure of carrying the aspirations of an entire town on his shoulders, as he struggles to pursue his own very different dreams.

Now, 25 years later, even when realizing that maybe the heroes of this story shouldn’t have their faults laughed off so much (Tweeder really should be in jail), there’s still a lot of good left.

Charming entertaining sports high school movie with a southern twang. The patriotic intro is a little corny, but thankfully the movie picks up the pace quickly and feels more like a chill slice of life movie than your typical high school cliche storyline as the main conflict focuses more on the characters trying to please and later stand up their psychotic Football coach. The football scenes are fairly entertaining. I dig the late-90's rock soundtrack. The son wanting to branch off and make his own path is nothing new, but it's decently executed. The Billy Bob character starts off as a walking stereotype. But man, the coach is a moron for demanding that a concussion player play. It turns the antagonist into a cartoon character. I also groaned at the melodramatic reaction from girlfriend acting speechless just because her boyfriend is mildly happy about being a football star. It's far from perfect, but I had a good time with this movie and I understand the nostalgia for it.

I am now 38 and saw this movie when it came out and this is up there with remember the titans and coach carter as a must see people giving this below a 3 star never played or understood sports and it shows
