After moving to Pasadena, Texas, country boy Bud Davis starts hanging around a bar called Gilley's, where he falls in love with Sissy, a cowgirl who believes the sexes are equal. They eventually marry, but their relationship is turbulent due to Bud's traditional view of gender roles. Jealousy over his rival, Wes, leads to their separation, but Bud attempts to win Sissy back by triumphing at Gilley's mechanical bull-riding competition.

Many of my friends told me this was a great and funny movie, but I never got around to watching it until now. They must have been drunk when they say it because I was not impressed at all. It's basically about a lot of boring ordinary people living boring ordinary lives. I kept waiting for something exciting to happen, but every time it looked like it was coming up to an exciting part of the movie, it just fizzled and died. The characters were even more uninteresting as the storyline. Dull is the best word to describe it.

Despite the part where he slaps his girl then asks her to marry him, this movie got me back in the rhythm of watching classics and it’s one of the best to show how Texas really was back then.

Think of the run Travolta had between Saturday Night Fever, Grease and Urban Cowboy. All three were major pop culture phenom movies with great double soundtracks of different genres. This one stands up better that I would have thought. Just watched it again for the first time in like 40 years. Good movie, great soundtrack. Great nostalgia. What more could you want?

I saw the movie for the first time yesterday 9/29/24 and I really enjoyed it. It’s really quite humorous at times. They are in crazy love with each other even during the worst of times. I honestly didnt know howmthenmovie would end. The riveting soumdtrack was awesome. I do remember working in a music store when the movie came out and everyone bought it. Now i know why.
