Junior S @RT39899143 Jul 13 At time this is a rollicking western with effective performances; Burt Lancaster is his usual greatness, but the best performance in the movie is Bruce Davison as a first principled then conflicted US cavalryman. This movie effectively contemplates questions of armed conflict depicting murderous brutality and torturous acts on both sides; later these same themes would be explored to greater depth by Apocalypse Now and Platoon; in this way Ulzana’s Raid is a precursor to these themes and represents a maturing of the American Western. However, the cinematographic style and the use F Troop style score undercut the importance of these themes; it’s as if the movie is unaware of its dark subject. Also, the closing freeze-frame had me laughing hard, especially once the 1950s goofy score kicks in. The closing shot alone may be worth watching this movie. See more Matthew D @OceanSage Jun 10 For a movie that wants to humanize and understand the American Native, it sure goes out of its way to demonize them, while never mentioning they were just defending their own land. Ulzana's Raid (1972) is one of those dull American Westerns after the heyday of great Westerns from the 1950s and 1960s. It's got nice wide shots, but dreadfully dull. None of the characters are particularly interesting or complex. It's also somehow both racist against the Natives as well as the white men. They also almost certainly killed a ton of real horses for this movie. I cannot really recommend it in earnest. See more Abhishek B @RT99159990 Feb 24 Harsh Realism. Not the most captivating plot I’ve seen in the genre and one I will likely instantly forget having seen. Watched on DVD.
