Training Day is a gritty, intense crime thriller; Denzel is phenomenal as Alonzo. He’s charismatic, intimidating, unpredictable, and somehow manages to make the character entertaining even when he’s doing terrible things. Ethan Hawke gives a strong performance too, especially as Jake slowly realizes that the person training him may be completely corrupt. The movie does a great job creating a feeling of constant tension. You never really know what Alonzo is going to do next, and the entire day feels like it’s spiraling further out of control. The dialogue is also one of the movie’s biggest strengths, with plenty of memorable lines.

My favorite actor Denzel Washington is absolutely at his best here, (aside from Malcolm X). His screen presence and charisma as the villainous Alonzo Harris is unmatched. Ethan Hawke puts in a great performance as Jake, as well as the solid supporting cast. We also have gritty writing, very witty banter, and a great hip-hop soundtrack. Training Day will always hold a big place in my movie heart. The only nitpick I have is Dr. Dre's terrible performance. 11/10
