David G. @RT25716413 3d What can be said about this classic? One of the greatest film noir ever made. See more Johnathon W @Hoppynsc 3d Classic crime noir that, while a bit dated, is still one of Orson Welles's best films. The cast is excellent across the board, with Charlton Heston as his leading man best while Welles gives one of his best performances as Cap. Quinlan, a corrupt police detective who goes up against Heston's Vargas. Yes, Heston is in brown face playing the movie, thus dating it, but still gives an excellent performance. Behind the camera, Welles delivers another classic, with a nice mix of twists and turns, along with his iconic camera shots (the opening remains a classic). The plot is nicely shaded, as while Quinlan is indeed corrupt and a racist, he may actually catching the guilty. All in all, classic crime noir at its best. See more Simon T @MovieTart Feb 10 The Orson Welles of Magnificent Ambersons and Chimes at Midnight, say, has descended into self-parody here. A weird tale of small border town corruption performed as Victorian melodrama (every member of the cast encouraged to paint in the gariest oils), this is both incomprehensible and tortuously slow. Welles seems more interested in lighting and camerawork than intelligibility. Cross-talk here is as irritating as it was in Citizen Kane. Charlton Heston, wholly miscast here as a moustachioed Mexican policeman, gives the best performance, but his naturalism in an ocean of ham means he virtually disappears.
