Jay W @RT52162311 3d In Don Bluth's book, he admits that he felt he was the wrong fit for this type of movie. And given the end result, I would agree with him. Not helping with this was the budget being cut, 300 animators being laid off and rushing to make the film in 19 months. Heck, the whole animation studio shut down just 10 days after this film was released. It begins with the Earth being blown up. But as we cut to 15 years in the future, it seems like humanity has adjusted pretty well to living the Cowboy Bebop universe. Enough so that when our main character is given the chance to literally rebuild another Earth, he'll get around to it. You know, if he's paid enough money. Overall, this movie brings nothing new to the table. There is nothing this movie does that isn't done better in another sci-fi movie. The characters aren't likeable, if they don't care whether they succeed on their mission, why should I? The villains aren't interesting and it leads to the whole thing feeling very dull. The story is exciting from beginning to end, the voice acting is excellent, and the script keeps the adventure moving with plenty of memorable moments. The biggest weakness is the pacing. The story races from one event to the next, leaving little time to develop its characters or build stronger emotional connections between them. It often feels like there was enough material for a much longer movie. Visually, the film is a mixed bag. The traditional 2D animation still looks charming today, but the CGI has aged quite poorly. The early 3D effects now look dated and don’t blend naturally with the hand-drawn animation, making the visual style feel inconsistent. Even so, the creativity, thrilling adventure, and heartfelt story easily outweigh the technical shortcomings. It’s an ambitious animated sci-fi film that deserves to be remembered, even if time hasn’t been kind to all of its visuals.
