Blake- N @PBSAniDom May 25 The Immigrant is a great film from The Weinstein Company, delivering a moody and emotionally heavy drama that stays with you after it ends. I first watched it in 2014 and still remember how strong its atmosphere is. The performances are excellent, with the cast bringing a quiet intensity that makes every scene feel grounded and real. The film relies on subtle emotion rather than heavy dialogue, which works in its favor. Visually, it is beautifully shot with a strong period feel, and the slow-burn pacing helps build the emotional weight naturally. It’s not fast-moving, but that restraint adds to its impact. Overall, it’s a powerful and well-crafted drama. I rate it a 9/10—serious, engaging, and memorable without needing big spectacle. The characters are desperate but are not defined by their pain and sorrow. It has genuine things to say, but never turns those ideas into obvious pronouncements about the perils of the "American Dream". Cotillard, Phoenix, and Renner all do some of their best work here and Gray just directs the hell out of the whole thing. See more isla s @RT89656869 09/03/2022 I thought this was quite an atmospheric film, with a somewhat chilling performance from Joaquin Phoenix as Bruno. Its quite a gritty film. I found myself feeling quite sorry for the main character and I admired her ability to try to defend herself. Its a film about trickery, manipulation and exploitation of desperation, hence it being a somewhat sobering watch, certainly in part. I liked the setting - NYC in the early 1900s. I also enjoyed seeing the coreographed theatre sequences and the music played (piano et al.). There is one particularly tense scene. This is quite a good drama film that I'd recommend to others. It's a slow, sad character story, and in that vein, it was pretty well done, but it was just a little too bleak and dreary for me to enjoy. See more 03/16/2021 this movie depicts the difficulties of immigrants in the early XXth century, thanks to a really good soundtrack, filming... etc. sadly though, some characters such as the one portrayed by Jeremy Renner weren't given enough depth, despite the fact they played a big role in the scenario.
