Critics Consensus

Mixing multiple genres, The Gorge makes for a surprisingly endearing romance until its action-thriller obligations steer proceedings back onto a more predictable path.

Two rules: don't show me your monster and don't explain it, because whatever you say is going to be silly. They broke both rules. Go to Full Review

It's a tough balance to strike and I don't think the sci-fi part works as well as [the romance]. The two [actors] have a lot of chemistry and look great together, the film looks great, and the score is great. Go to Full Review

The special effects are quite good, but “The Gorge” doesn’t scale the goofy heights in a rollercoaster ride way that it thinks it does, stalling out with a hackneyed ending that makes you shrug your shoulders and want to move on to something better. Go to Full Review

Scott Derrickson has crafted in The Gorge what feels like an adaptation of a video game that doesn’t exist, one that shines especially in its first half and in its impossible love story, brought to life by a dream team of actors. [Full Review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Scott Derrickson elevates The Gorge through its artful visuals and a thrilling techno-heavy score from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, even if its storytelling frequently stumbles throughout its 128-minute runtime. Go to Full Review

For a movie like this to excel, the creators have to thread a very specific needle. The romance has to spark. The monsters have to be terrifying. The mystery needs to be fully engaging. Unfortunately, The Gorge is halfway there in all three facets. Go to Full Review

Zach P. @Zach3000 9h Very much enjoyed every aspect of this movie See more Devan B. @DevBell 1d LOVE this movie! Hope they make a sequel! Very good acting, suspense, romance and action! My kinda movie! See more stephen b 2d It takes a left turn and starts to remind me of a video game adaption. That said, actual video game adaptation movies should take note on how to make a decent movie. See more Benjamin W. @Code70 Jan 20 Man, I wish it did, but this didn’t really work for me. I felt like it was over ambitious, and tried to be too many things. It’s at its most compelling with the romance believe it or not, but its action is kinda generic, and the whole backstory is wildly uneven, bordering on ridiculous. Also, the tone is quite jarring at times. You’ll have the leads flirting at one point, then being attacked by bizarro creatures, then get back to flirting right afterwards like nothing happened. It wasn’t terrible, it’s superficially entertaining, the two leads did a good job, and like I said the romance was actually quite nice. But it was wildly uneven, to be sure. See more Steve N @Dredd_Pirate_Roberts Jan 19 I can’t explain why I should hate this movie ! But I love it. It’s sci-fi, rom-com, government conspiracy hallmark movie all in one. I hate mikes teller. But in this he’s ok dude. And of coarse Anya I don’t like all her movies but when I do she’s on target. Give this a try keep your brain outside and have fun ! See more Read all reviews
