Weird, intense, and more or less heartfelt. If you take issue with ambiguity, you may not find this satisfactory. I think this characteristic is what makes this, and similar titles, so worth watching and understanding. Maybe it is because Tobey Maguire has such a wide-eyed expression all the time. Only Ray Liotta's performance has any menacing weight to it. Laura Linney seems to be channeling the Sue Anne Nivens character from The Mary Tyler Moore Show.
